Google Apps vs. Google Accounts Parity Coming

Google Apps vs. Google Accounts Parity Coming

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); Google Apps users who want access to all the same products that regular Google Accounts have won’t have to wait much longer. An anonymous tipster tells me a Google Trusted Tester program is underway right now, which “transitions” Google Apps accounts to full access to all GOOG products, including Voice, Reader, Buzz, Analytics, and more. Here’s the official Help page which includes a visualization of the...

Lessons from Apple on Advertising and Aesthetics

Lessons from Apple on Advertising and Aesthetics

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); Steve Jobs announced the iPhone 4 yesterday in his WWDC keynote, and it’s a gorgeous device with software upgrades that include multitasking, a video chat app called FaceTime, and more. I’m still a happy Android user, but I have to hand it to Apple. They continue to school the industry on aesthetics and marketing. Case in point: the FaceTime demo video. First, some background. I got a Sprint EVO at Google I/O which...

“The Swype package you installed does not match the screen size”

“The Swype package you installed does not match the screen size”

If you tried out the excellent (and unofficial) Swype beta for your Nexus One–the keyboard replacement that makes touch-typing much easier–you may be getting an annoying popup about how the Swype package you installed doesn’t match the screen size. I love Swype so much I’ve been putting up with the error for weeks, constantly dismissing it. Turns out a better version for N1 users kills the error. I uninstalled my error-prone version and installed this one yesterday;...

Big! Exciting! News: ThinkTank Is Now at Expert Labs

Big! Exciting! News: ThinkTank Is Now at Expert Labs

I am thrilled to announce I’ve landed a pinch-me dream job: I’m now a Project Director at Expert Labs, the new non-profit headed up by Anil Dash. I’ll be in charge of developing ThinkTank. Here’s what happened. Last March I was thinking about buying a netbook, and asked my Twitter followers a question: Do you have a netbook? What do you love or hate about it? When I got back 243 informed opinions by savvy netbook owners, I knew I needed a way to easily parse and...

Hackers Don’t Tinker Because They Got Invited

Hackers Don’t Tinker Because They Got Invited

Mark Pilgrim’s excellent exposition on the “tinkerer’s sunset” (an idea Alex Payne put forth in his iPad piece I linked earlier) got me thinking about the nature of tinkerers, and whether the iPad really represents a sunset for them. The optimist in me thinks it couldn’t even if it tried. First, know that I fundamentally agree with Alex and Mark: the closed nature of the iPad turns me off, and I wouldn’t give one to my kid if I were encouraging her to...

Alex Payne on the iPad

Alex Payne on the iPad

“The iPad leaves me with the feeling that Apple’s interests and values going forward are deeply divergent from my own. The future of personal computing that the iPad shows us is both seductive and dystopian. It’s not a future I want to bring into my home.” al3x on the iPad. Read it. iPad First Impressions

iPad First Impressions

Based solely on live blogs and a choppy audio feed: Terrible name, gorgeous device, great price point. I may be an Apple critic, but I’m not made of stone–this thing is beautiful. Instantly my Kindle seems like a joke. Kottke may be right: The Kindle app plus Instapaper installed on the iPad may very well be a much better reading and browsing experience than the Kindle itself, plus you get everything else it does. Here’s Apple’s official iPad page. And you? Continua...

Moving Site Hosts; Closing Comments Temporarily

Moving Site Hosts; Closing Comments Temporarily

DreamHost’s four-hour network outage yesterday, which took my private server down with it, was the cherry on top of a four-month sundae of DreamHost downages which convinced me to move to a MediaTemple DV server. I’m completing that move this afternoon. While the DNS propagates, comments and user registrations will be shut off here at Smarterware. Things should be back to normal by the end of the week. Thanks for your patience! Continua a leggere – Original Link: Moving...
