Now Shipping: ThinkUp Beta 1

Now Shipping: ThinkUp Beta 1

Hit a big milestone today! We released the first beta of ThinkUp , the PHP/MySQL webapp that archives your social media interactions in a database you control. Download it here. Following eight alpha releases over the past eight months, I’m so proud that the ThinkUp community and the software product itself has reached beta. The beta represents hundreds of commits by over 20 thoughtful developers scattered across the globe, and countless conversations on the mailing list , in Wave , on Skype, IM, and on GitHub . It’s amazing how far ThinkUp’s come since its early days as a solo weekend project . This release includes an easy, three-step installer, multi-user and account support, full search and export of you and your friends’ posts (something even Twitter doesn’t offer for those of us over the 3,200 tweet limit ), the beginnings of Facebook integration, and neat data visualizations courtesy of Google Maps and the Google Charts API. Here’s a quick screenshot tour what what we’ve been working on in ThinkUp, and how you can get involved with the project

How to Use Your Tech Power for Good

How to Use Your Tech Power for Good

Last week Leo Laporte did a Gov 2.0 special show on TWiT with Tim O’Reilly and Jennifer Pahlka, a must-listen for programmers who want to use their skills to make the world a better place. It opened with this Code for America spot, which features Tim, Mark Zuckerberg, Caterina Fake, and Biz Stone. The Code for America fellowship application deadline has passed, but if you want to use your coding skills to help our government make better policy decisions, you can do so by contributing to ThinkUp .

Chrome Beta for Mac/Linux Released

Chrome Beta for Mac/Linux Released

Today Google finally releases a beta of Google Chrome for Mac and Linux . I’ve been using a Chromium build on my Mac for awhile now, and while it’s faster than Firefox on the Mac, it’s not nearly as fast and stable as the Windows version of Chrome. Also, without Google Gears for Mac OS X 10.6 , Chrome and Google webapps are even less useful on the Mac. While I was on the road with my MacBook over the last few weeks, I found myself missing my desktop PC back at home only because of the more-stable Chrome and Gears availability. Will Gears for 10.6 will ever come out, since they’re phasing it out in favor of HTML5 ? With features that depend on Gears like offline Gmail coming out of Labs , you’d think so.

TWiG Tip: Icon-only, Perma-Tabs for Gmail and Google Reader

TWiG Tip: Icon-only, Perma-Tabs for Gmail and Google Reader

On each new episode of This Week in Google ( details ) I’ll highlight a tip for using cloud/Google apps smarter, faster, and better. I’ll document those tips here. You use Firefox, you keep Gmail and Google Reader open at all times, and you wish they didn’t take up so much space in the tab bar. (Maybe you’re on a netbook, or maybe you’ve always got a dozen tabs open at once, so real estate is scarce.) You can permanently affix the Gmail and Reader tabs in your tab bar, reduce them to show the tab favicon only, and display the number of unread items in each using a collection of Firefox add-ons. See what it looks like in the image above: the Gmail and Reader tabs are on the far left, icon-only, with unread item counts–19 unread messages and 1k+ unread items (yikes!)–on the icons themselves. To reproduce this setup in your own copy of Firefox, you’ll need four Firefox add-ons which I’ve put all together in a single collection. Install all the add-ons in the Icon-Only Perma-Tabs for Gmail and Google Reader collection. Restart Firefox. Then, in Better Gmail 2, make sure “Unread Message Count in Favicon” is checked. In Better GReader, make sure “Show Unread Count in Favicon” is checked

Everywhere But Here: June Posts About the Internet

Rather than put up a new post every time I do something somewhere other than here, I’ll save it up and get it all over with in one giant self-promoting shot once a month. Here’s my Mac-heavy byline roundup for June. Gmail Power Tools [Macworld] Hands On with Mac OS X Snow Leopard (Developer Preview) [Lifehacker] Contributed sections to Customize the OS X Workspace and Manage Files in OS X Your Way [Macworld] Tweak Your Way to a Better Finder [Lifehacker] Extreme Makeover: The Email Inbox Edition [Work Smarter at HarvardBusiness.org] Master the Art of Working Remotely [Work Smarter at HarvardBusiness.org] Coming to a Microsoft Shop Near You: More Macs [Work Smarter at HarvardBusiness.org] Co-Twittering @Pelotonics with CoTweet [PeloLife] Springtime for Apple Podcast (MP3 Available) [Copper Robot] A rant on the uselessness of user manuals [ T3 Magazine ] — Doesn’t appear to be available online yet, but I had tons of fun writing this and will add the link when it comes online. T3 is a UK mag but I believe there’s a US edition available as well at your local newsstand. That is all. Carry on.
