From the Tips Box: Save Money on Gas, Freshen Up Your Closets, and Uncover Long-Lost Blogs [From The Tips Box]

1 Ago/09

We save some extra cash on gas by watching the news, cover up the smell of the skeletons in our closets, and recover long-since deleted blog posts with the help of Google Reader.

Save Money on Gas by Watching the Gas Futures

Jay writes in with a clever way of saving money on gas:

Watch the gas futures on CNBC. In my town, the price of gas is usually $.70 more than the gasoline futures. Find out what the average price for gas above is futures in your town and add the figure to the futures to find out whether the next tick is up or down. When the next tick is up, fill your tank before it hits the street. If the next tick is down, you will know to wait in until they update the price at the pump. I have saved as much as $.10/gallon for a 20 gallon fill up by waiting a day or so, and sometimes go ahead and fill up even though I have half a tank, when I know the price is going up.

Keep Your Closets Fresh With Dryer Sheets

John wrote in with a way to keep things smelling nicer:

I live in a 300 year old house… Things get musty. By sheer dumb luck,
I ended up leaving a box of unopened dryer sheets in my wardrobe, and
now instead of having a musty smell, I have a nice dryer fresh smell.
I’m sure it would work with an opened box as well. Plus, dryer sheets
are one of those things where it doesn’t matter if you have 5000 sheets:
EVENTUALLY, you will use them.

Open New Google Docs With One Click

Jason wrote in with a quick tip that literally made me slap my forehead because it’s so obvious:

I have a bookmark on my toolbar with this as target: (to open a new Google Doc in one click)

You could also use this address with Launchy or similar apps.

Be Eco-Friendly While Saving Some Pennies

Sean tells us how he saves money and the environment:

I just realized I do something and am not sure if others do. I thought it would be a good article.

Re-use plastic bags. When you pack that sandwich or lunch meat or left over hamburger patty re-use the plastic baggy. Not only does it save you money but it create less trash.

Those grocery store bags, use them for mini trash cans, or to bring your lunch to work.

If every person in the world re-used their sandwich baggy once, think how much that will save in landfills!

Skip the Delay of Gmail’s Undo Feature

Sometimes you just don’t want the delay of Gmail’s Undo feature. For those instances, David has you covered:

If you use Gmail’s “Undo” feature, double-clicking the “Send” button suppresses the effects of “Undo” for this mail.

Use Google Reader as a Blog Archive

Terry accidentally discovered that Google Reader can be used as a way to start a blog archive by subscribing to your own feeds:

Back in 2006 I had a few personal blogs – an art blog, a politics blog, a personal blog. I was playing with the medium, hosting issues and also my own commitment to write posts (I wasn’t very good at keeping up, at all).

I had my own blog feeds in Google Reader which I’ve never unsubscribed from. I have an addiction to reading blogs and have a long list in my reader broken up by various topic folders and things do get lost. By the end of 2007, I had erased my blogs, and failed to make a backup copy. I wrote some posts that were meaningful to me, but accepted they were lost for good.

Today I was cleaning up my reader and surprised how many blogs I once looked for updates were gone or moved to another stream somewhere. There were posts in them, and I always assumed the blog feed need to be live for that to happen. Then I ran into my old blogs – all of which are not hosted anywhere online and haven’t for almost 2 years. Yet by having ‘all items’ selected I could see every post I ever wrote. Amazing! I had a backup of my old blogs all along, without knowing. And this includes images I posted (I am a photographer by trade).

I noticed on my old Myspace blog this does not work if you only had Excerpts broadcast for your posts, as those posts from 2006 were long gone (along with my myspace user account, which I closed by 2007).
