Lessons from Apple on Advertising and Aesthetics

Lessons from Apple on Advertising and Aesthetics

Steve Jobs announced the iPhone 4 yesterday in his WWDC keynote, and it’s a gorgeous device with software upgrades that include multitasking, a video chat app called FaceTime, and more. I’m still a happy Android user, but I have to hand it to Apple. They continue to school the industry on aesthetics and marketing. Case in point: the FaceTime demo video. First, some background. I got a Sprint EVO at Google I/O which has a front-facing video camera, and presumably the...

HTML5 Test Your Web Browser

HTML5 Test Your Web Browser

Most Internet users who read about HTML5 and how it is going to change the web might think it is all about HTML5 video as the controversy surrounding it was all over the news lately. There are not a lot of websites that make use of HTML5 yet. Some video portals like Youtube began to add HTML5 video as an alternative to the common Flash...

Google Gives HTC EVO Phones to Google I/O Attendees

Google Gives HTC EVO Phones to Google I/O Attendees

Not only did Google pre-mail Droid handsets to I/O attendees, today they gave the Sprint HTC EVO 4G out to conference attendees at the Moscone Center, with a 2GB Micro SD card filled with music. Awhile back I tweeted that I wouldn’t accept “free” phones like these, since I cover Google on TWiG and at web sites and magazines where I occasionally freelance, and accepting a “gift” from a company I talk and write about so much seemed like a bad idea. But, I’m...

Stream Video With Opera Unite

Stream Video With Opera Unite

The topic of streaming video to a friend’s computer came up yesterday evening. Direct experience is often the base for excellent articles and this will hopefully make no exception. The first option that we tried was VLC Media Player which offers streaming but that did not work out that well somehow. Maybe it was because of router’s blocking ports that were needed or our basic understanding of available streaming protocols. Maybe it was because it was simply to complicated...

What’s The Best Web Browser For HTML5 Video Playback?

What’s The Best Web Browser For HTML5 Video Playback?

You might have heard about HTML5 and specifically HTML5 Video in the news lately. How it is supposed to replace Flash based video players eventually. Some websites are already experimenting with HTML5 video players including Youtube and Dailymotion. Two standards are currently competing with each other to become the HTML5 video standard: Ogg Theora and h.264. This would not be such a big deal for computer users if most browser developer’s have not decided to support only one of...

Opera Downloads Triple After Browser Ballot Screen Goes Live In Europe

Opera is in the news quite a lot in the last couple of days. First they manage to rush out the final release of Opera 10.50 in a less time than some companies need to provide a patch for their application and then they are the first to release figures on the impact of the browser ballot screen in Europe. According to a Computer World article Opera downloads tripled after the browser ballot screen went live in Europe on March 1. The article fails to offer absolute numbers and it is not...
