Slacker Radio Puts Customizable Streaming Tunes on iPhones [Featured IPhone Download]

14 Gen/09

iPhone/iPod touch only: Slacker Radio, a streaming radio/favorites service similar to Last.fm and Pandora, hits the iPhone with a dedicated app offering some neat tools to customize streams.

Working off the same backbone as Slacker’s main site, Slacker’s radio app is fairly straightforward, and has the same limitations as its brethren—no background-playing on the iPhone/iPod touch, skipping only allowed for a maximum of 5 songs at a time. Slacker also throws in short audio ads on every sixth track, but all those limitations (except the background app issue) can be removed with a $3.99/month membership.

The neat part of Slacker’s app is its stream customization. From a menu accessible at the top of every stream, you can choose how often your favorite artists and tracks are mixed into the stream, the mainstream popularity of the artists selected, and what era they’re from. That last bit can be really helpful in customizing your tunes—if I, for example, want to hear big-band music, I usually want it from its heyday years, not modern re-recordings that break up the nostalgic old-time audio feel. Check out your customization options below:

Slacker Radio is a free app for iPhones and iPod touch models running at least the 2.0 software. Streaming requires a free account sign-up with Slacker. Which of the three big streaming services works best on your device?
